Working Women And Health Issues: Sitting Is Deadly!

Written by Natalia

sitting is deadlyMost of us already know sitting is bad for our health, but how many of us actually know that sitting is deadly? No, I’m not exaggerating; this is what four experts say in the report presented below.

We all know that prolonged sitting causes obesity and disrupts metabolic function -anyone trying to lose weight is aware of this-, and that’s why more people every day are adopting a healthier lifestyle, including exercise in their daily schedule.

Nonetheless, research shows that even if we engage in regular exercise, it’s not enough to neutralise the consequences of too much sitting during the rest of the day.

According to a study by Dr. Hidde van der Ploeg, a senior research fellow at the University of Sydney’s School of Public Health, sitting for 11 or more hours per day increased risk of death by 40 percent, regardless of other activity levels (Van Der Ploeg, Hidde P. (2012). “Sitting Time and All-Cause Mortality Risk in 222 497 Australian Adults”. Archives of Internal Medicine, 172(6), 494-500. doi:10.1001/archinternmed.2011.2174).

Considering that most of us work in an office, we spend 8-10 hours on a chair in front of our desk. If you add the time we spend sitting in non-working hours, such as in our car stuck in traffic, having lunch or dinner -especially in a restaurant with clients or friends and family where we tend to spend more time due to discussions and socialisation-, and of course, when we’re back home after a long day sitting on the couch watching TV seems such a nice and relaxing idea! OK, did I just counted at least 12 hours sitting daily? According to the experts, we are slowly killing ourselves.

In the infographic below, published in The Washington Post Health & Science, you’ll find a report about all the health issues researchers have linked with sitting for long periods of time and why they claim that sitting is deadly.

Therefore, apart from exercising we need to cut down the hours we spend sitting. We should spend less time in front of the TV, go for a walk instead of sitting on the couch, go on foot to the closest convenient store instead of taking the car; there are plenty of ideas!  But what about work?

Considering the nature of our jobs, that’s easier said than done. We have to change our working habits and incorporate more activity.

It is important to note here that standing is not panacea. Prolonged standing has its own risks as it can lead to “the development of musculoskeletal disorders, especially in the legs, knees and lower back. While you can stand for as long as it feels comfortable, most experts recommend a 50:50 sit-stand ratio” (as stated in Men’s Health, “Best Stand-up Desks“).

In the report below the interviewed experts suggest a few things we can do to eliminate the dangerous effects of sitting in our health and change our working practices. Apart from that, here are some other things you could try:

  • Stand up while you are on the phone.

That way you can walk around your office every time you are taking calls.

  • Implement active meetings.

Have you seen how Hugh Laurie as Dr House in the famous TV series ‘House MD’ conducts meetings with his team? Walking on the corridors of the hospital, or in the elevator while going to see a patient. Although we are not all famous doctors that everyone needs urgently, using his way and implementing walking meetings will be truly beneficial for our health. Not to mention that by moving small meetings from the conference room to the concourse will boost creativity.

Career Success And Personal Branding: Self-Promotion 101

Written by Natalia

career successIt might surprise you, but personal branding is much more important for your career success than you think. No matter how hard you work and how good you are at what you do, if you don’t pay attention to your personal branding, achieving career success will be rather difficult.

Personal Branding and Self-Promotion

What’s the connection to career success? Why do we need to promote ourselves in order to succeed?

It is a fact that there are a lot of people (most of them women) who truly hate to talk about themselves; what they do, what they know, what they have to give. They believe their advertisement should be their work. They think that self-promotion is like bragging. I know, I am one of them! (at least I used to be – I’m making progress)

But it isn’t like that at all! The truth is that self-promotion is about demonstrating your value. And demonstrating your value is about building your personal brand.

And don’t forget: every time you are applying for a job, you are selling yourself. The ‘product’ is you! And like any other product, you need a good advertisement.

This is why my choice for today is Margaret Buj’s article on ‘career attraction’. Her article is meant to help people who feel awkward advertising themselves. She provides five tips for promoting ourselves with ease and confidence.

You Need to Change Your Perspective

Authentic self-promotion is about giving and sharing. You are not bragging; you’re giving and sharing your gifts with the world. You’re sharing ideas that can change a person’s life.

Self-promotion is about strategically building your personal brand to ensure that those who can help you accomplish more in your career will know not just who you are, but the value you have to offer and how you’d like to add more of it.

The truth is, people aren’t going to know how talented and accomplished you are unless you tell them! If those who can help you accomplish more in your career don’t know who you are and the value you have to provide, it doesn’t serve anyone.

You can read the whole article here: “How to Promote Yourself with Ease and Confidence”

Even if you won’t be able to implement all of these at once, with one step at a time you’ll be one step closer to your career success.

However, I’d like to endorse the statement in the closing paragraph of her article: “Letting the fear of being criticized determine what you do is a surefire way to never achieve what you want in work or in life“. What a valuable lesson! If you manage to adopt this way of thinking in your life, you can’t even imagine how much happier you will be and how free you will feel! It’s the only way of pursuing your dreams and letting them come true…

4 Signs It’s Time For A Career Change

Written by Natalia

career changeHave you ever considered that the solution to your work-related problems might be a career change? If your career does not fulfil you, if you are not passionate about what you do, happiness might feel like a utopian location far away from where you stand. If you are not happy with the path you have chosen to walk on, it is difficult to achieve career success -at least a long lasting one-!

Don’t forget that our job takes 80% of our time daily. This is why a career change can be a life saver. You can’t expect to achieve happiness if you are feeling miserable the biggest part of your everyday life!

The article “Knowing when to give up” in Career Attraction, by Jack Shardlow, will help you determine if a career change is what you need.

” It’s surprising to hear just how many people openly say they dislike their job, whether it’s because of the people they’re working with, the duties involved or the fulfillment they get from it on a day-to-day basis.

Does this sound like you or someone you know? Is every morning a chore, with the nights only providing a brief intermission before the next day seeps more of your soul away? There’s no two ways about it: you may need to give up. This isn’t a bad reflection on you — on the contrary, it takes courage to push yourself out of autopilot and accept that you need this change.

So, how do you know when to give up? “

You can read the whole article here: “Knowing When to Give Up: 4 Signs It’s Time to Change Your Career (and What to Do About Them)”

Best Jobs For Women

Written by Natalia

best jobs for womenWhat were the best jobs for women in 2013 and what are the predictions for this and the coming years? Some years ago, if a girl wanted to work there weren’t many options. Nowadays women are working in all fields. From factory workers to CEOs, and from police officers to pilots, women can be found in every working environment. And it is not uncommon in our century for females to run the household finances, and -more recently- to run businesses.

But what are the best jobs for women these days? What were the most high-paying career options last year? What do statistics show about working women?

In the infographic below, published in Visually by Graphs, you will see a nice summary of every kind of research around the topic ‘professional women’.

According to research, 73% of working women had white collar occupations in 2009 and it is projected that women labour force will be increased to 78 million by 2018.

As reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the best-paying job for women in 2013 was the one of the pharmacist. In the second and third place were lawyers and computers and information systems managers accordingly. Great news for women in STEM: in this top 19 there are many professions in that field.

The job of the physician’s assistant is the highest paying job in the top 10 career options for women, followed by that of the video game designer. It is worth to take a look at the jobs that women outnumber men. Among them are school teachers, insurance underwriters and HR managers.

Looking at the countries with the highest percentage of women’s entrepreneurship I was surprised I didn’t see the United States or any of the ‘big’ European countries (the ones with the strongest economy). Thailand has the highest percentage of female entrepreneurs in the world! Peru, Colombia and Venezuela are following. To my amazement, Greece -where I come from- is ranked in the 9th place!

It is a fact that women are starting new firms at twice the rate of all other businesses. Today, women-owned businesses in the Unites States represent nearly 40% of all US businesses. The most interesting fact is that women-owned businesses employ 35% more people than all the Fortune 500 companies combined!

Cover Letter Lacks Human Voice! Try A Pain Letter Instead

Written by Natalia

cover letterEvery job hunter knows the rules: to apply for a job you need a professional CV tailored to the job’s specific needs and a ‘killer’ cover letter in agreement with the job description that promotes your skills and expertise.  Or not?

What if I told you that it doesn’t have to be this way? What if I told you that you can follow a different path far away from the ‘standard procedure’ that would make you stand out?

I received an email the other day that made me thinking for a long time. It was a link to an article in The Denver Post, written by Liz Ryan. I read the article, the discussion on the comments section, I even downloaded the eBook! My brain was working in lightning speed. I could almost hear gears inside my head spinning! What did I just read?

Probably one of the most well-established myths had just “busted”. Her outside-the-box perspective suggests the complete opposite of any typical career advice: forget the cover letters! As she puts it, they are written in Zombie Language, the language Darth Vader writes in, but definitely not what humans write in! And I can’t say that I don’t agree with that. Can you imagine how many cover letters hiring managers read every day that, except for the names, are exactly the same?

So, now you are probably wondering “Ok, what to do instead then?”. What Liz proposes as a replacement of a cover letter, is to write a Pain Letter and send it in the good old-fashioned way: in the mail!

(…)  That’s a horrifying way to communicate, and as bad as it is to read that stuff in corporate life (or to get a Zombie memo from your kid’s school) it’s even worse to read about a person described that way. Zombie Language is not the way to bring across a brilliant and vibrant job-seeker’s heft and spark.
We don’t have to use that kind of language to describe ourselves. We can put a human voice in our resumes, for one thing. And when it comes time to write a cover letter, we can ditch the tired cover letter format and write a Pain Letter, instead.
What’s a Pain Letter? It’s a letter that doesn’t go into the Black Hole of Death, for one thing — it goes directly to your hiring manager. You’ll find your hiring manager in two seconds on LinkedIn, by using the People Search page to find the person at your target employer who’d most likely be your boss in your new position.

Read the whole article here: “Forget the cover letter; write a pain letter, instead”

Would you try it? Would you be willing to discard well-established methods and implement new approaches in order to set yourself apart from any other candidate? Please do share your comments and thoughts. I’m very interested in your opinion!
