Career Success And Personal Branding: Self-Promotion 101

Written by Natalia

career successIt might surprise you, but personal branding is much more important for your career success than you think. No matter how hard you work and how good you are at what you do, if you don’t pay attention to your personal branding, achieving career success will be rather difficult.

Personal Branding and Self-Promotion

What’s the connection to career success? Why do we need to promote ourselves in order to succeed?

It is a fact that there are a lot of people (most of them women) who truly hate to talk about themselves; what they do, what they know, what they have to give. They believe their advertisement should be their work. They think that self-promotion is like bragging. I know, I am one of them! (at least I used to be – I’m making progress)

But it isn’t like that at all! The truth is that self-promotion is about demonstrating your value. And demonstrating your value is about building your personal brand.

And don’t forget: every time you are applying for a job, you are selling yourself. The ‘product’ is you! And like any other product, you need a good advertisement.

This is why my choice for today is Margaret Buj’s article on ‘career attraction’. Her article is meant to help people who feel awkward advertising themselves. She provides five tips for promoting ourselves with ease and confidence.

You Need to Change Your Perspective

Authentic self-promotion is about giving and sharing. You are not bragging; you’re giving and sharing your gifts with the world. You’re sharing ideas that can change a person’s life.

Self-promotion is about strategically building your personal brand to ensure that those who can help you accomplish more in your career will know not just who you are, but the value you have to offer and how you’d like to add more of it.

The truth is, people aren’t going to know how talented and accomplished you are unless you tell them! If those who can help you accomplish more in your career don’t know who you are and the value you have to provide, it doesn’t serve anyone.

You can read the whole article here: “How to Promote Yourself with Ease and Confidence”

Even if you won’t be able to implement all of these at once, with one step at a time you’ll be one step closer to your career success.

However, I’d like to endorse the statement in the closing paragraph of her article: “Letting the fear of being criticized determine what you do is a surefire way to never achieve what you want in work or in life“. What a valuable lesson! If you manage to adopt this way of thinking in your life, you can’t even imagine how much happier you will be and how free you will feel! It’s the only way of pursuing your dreams and letting them come true…

Dream Job: Turning Your Passion Into A Successful Career

Written by Natalia

successful career, dream jobIn order to have a successful career, you need to find out what motivates you, what you are passionate about, what you would absolutely love to do and would make you happy. That is your dream job.

So, how to pursue your dream job and turn your passion into a career -a successful career?

I stumbled upon an excerpt from Josh Shipp’s book “Jump Ship: Turn Your Passion into a Profession“, which I found really educating and I wanted to share with you.

The author focuses on the laws of Supply and Demand. As he puts it, “passion isn’t enough if there’s no business potential“. He then continues on how your way of thinking should be to identify the opportunities, what questions you should ask yourself to figure out if your dream job is worth pursuing, and ends with a valuable piece of advice for every professional: “you need to become an expert on everything related to your dream job“, outlining what you need to learn before deciding to take the leap and turn your passion into a successful career.

“ The trick is finding that sweet spot where what you love to do and what other people want overlap. Opportunity lies at the point where your passion and its usefulness to other people converge.

(…) That said, it’s almost always possible to find a career (or make your own) in an area closely related to something you love.

No one is going to pay you to read books for fun, but there are plenty of jobs — book editor, patent lawyer, proposal writer, reviewer/critic, researcher — that require a great deal of reading. No one is going to pay you for working in your garden or taking care of your own lawn, but they might be interested in buying your flowers or produce, or in learning how to create and tend their own garden. There’s the opportunity. “

Career Success In 2014

Written by Natalia

Career success in 20142014 has finally arrived, and among the wishes we all exchanged for this year, is achieving career success. We have already made our New Year career resolutions, but sticking to them is critical in order to be successful.

According to statistics, 45% of people make resolutions for the new year, but only 8% stick to them. This article by Carrie Pinsky in NCBR reveals the five steps we need to follow to stop being a part of the 92%.

As the author says, these strategies will also ‘help us live and work with greater purpose and meaning‘. The 5 steps she proposes can be summarised in these bullet points:

  • Identify your values
  • Revive your passion and get inspired
  • Improve your online presence
  • Review and update your resume
  • Improve your networking skills and invest in relationships

The only thing I would add is that another good strategy that will help you stick to your resolutions is to make realistic goals split in milestones. Besides the fact that it will be easier to achieve your mini goals one after another, you can also reward yourself each time you reach a milestone. We all know that positive reinforcement does wonders for keeping someone motivated!

” Business moves at a fast-forward pace. If we are just going through the motions at work or resting on past laurels, we soon will be left behind. Career planning is vital in today’s ever-changing market.
Whether you have a job you love or are looking for your next opportunity, it is equally as important to manage your career. What is calling you now? Where to next? And, what do you need to do to get there? ”

15 High Performance Habits For Career Success

Written by Natalia

Career SuccessFor the majority of professionals, career success is the key factor in happiness. Considering the fact that the 80% of our time daily is dedicated to our work, it’s no wonder career is taken so seriously.

This article by Lewis Humphries, in Lifehack, recommends a list of 15 good habits for career success as well as personal success (to include the remainder 20% of our daily lives).

As the author says, “You cannot succeed in life without first achieving personal growth” and I couldn’t agree more! Why don’t we all make a commitment for the coming year? Let’s focus on developing these practices that will lead to our life and career success.

“According to recent statistics released by the Office for National Statistics, under-employment in the UK has now reached its highest level since 1992. An estimated 1.46 million of the nation’s part-time workers are actively seeking full-time employment, as the government struggles to create viable job opportunities for its citizens.

So while British Prime Minister David Cameron may have recently called for individuals from poorer backgrounds to “raise their aspirations,” he must first focus on creating opportunities that motivate this demographic. Even then, it must be recognized that motivation and aspiration are both complex psychological processes, which require a daily commitment and the cultivation of a positive lifestyle.

With this in mind, it is worth identifying the high performance traits and practices that will help you to achieve your goals. Consider the following habits to be successful.”
